Penguins first started building robot versions of themselves to use as decoys to distract leopard seals while they fished. However, there were two problems with this plan. First of all, the robot penguins would short-circuit in water, and would sink to the ocean floor. Secondly, the penguins grew emotionally attached to the robots, and couldn’t bear to have them destroyed by the leopard seals. Soon the penguins realized that the robots made great companions, and they’ve been building robots for friends ever since.
